Pierre Huyghe is an artist especially famous for creating environments in which many factors evolve and affect the viewer. He is also said to be an intelectualist who always wants to examine the secrets of the mind.
In his exhibition, in Serpentine Galeery in London, he presented visual presentations of human thoughts on huge LED screens.
You may now ask how it is possible.
He started the whole process by showing images to random people. While seing them, their brains activated specific movements which were then captured by fMRI scanner. Computer tried to precisely reconstruct them by finding appropriate images and visions. Simply a machine which changes thoughts into art.
Eventually, thousands of trials, turned out to be amazing collages in which pictures appear as quickly as disappear. Because of that, all of the visitors can associate these images with different things according to their experiences and memories. It is like for example showing a picture of a snake to many people. Some of them would associate it symbollically with sin and evil, whereas the rest would see just an animal which can be seen in the ZOO.
Constantly changing pictures confuse the mind. At first you think you see an insect and a second after a landscape, a figure...?
The artist has on purpose put inside the exhibition plenty of flies. Their society creates different patterns on the walls and the ceiling. What's more, rhythms and pauses between images are modified and adjusted to conditions in the gallery. The light, temperature and humidity, presence of insects and sights of visitors - all of it influence the presentation. Smell, sound can contribute to the interpretation of the presentation in multiple ways as well. Huyghe tries to evoke thougts, tries to make people think about the human nature.
To conclude, this exhibition is about actions of the mind being converted into beautiful visions.
